Nighttime flies

When fishing at night time you have to make the fish see your fly. There are several ways to accomplish this, which leaves us with some different types of flies. Most often all types do the job by a water and you only have to choose the type you are most confident with.

Whatever type you choose, you know for sure that your chances of getting in contact with the trout increase most considerably with flies that are constructed to fish in the dark.

 Self-illuminating

You can cheat a little by tying a fly with a wide wing and self-illuminating body. The fish sees the light from the fly and the wide profile triggers it to rise and bite.
Fish these flies with the same lines and leaders as for the daytime fishing.
The green fly is most tempting for the fishing at Ammarnäs.

 Pressure wave

The fish’s lateral line is a most sensible pressure gauge.

By making a big muddler head the water will be pressed out to the sides, which the trout recognizes in the dark.

Flies with muddler heads are success-fully fished at the same level as the fish holds.

This is why an intermediate- or sink line of type 2 is needed for this fishing at Vindelälven.

Patterns like Sculpin Matuka, Bomber and mice are fished with a float line and will of course create a wave on the surface film that attract the fish to rise.

 Profile

By tying in the top wing a bit more horizontally you create a fly with a wide profile for the fish.

These flies should be fished above the trout so that they see the wide profile and rise to the fly.

If you use a float line with an intermediate tip you stand the best chances of succeeding and it is at the same time comfortable to cast in the dark.
